《SELFY : A CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT》は、山口真人が2020年より展開してきたSELFYシリーズの原点であり、SNS上で日常的に演出される“私”の姿を象徴的に描いた作品群である。 特定のモデルを持たず、カメラ目線やスマートフォンを持つ仕草といった記号化された構図を用いることで、誰かのようで誰でもない“集合的肖像”が構築されている。 描画にはアウトラインと平面的な構成が用いられ、ポップカルチャーと記号論的視点が融合する形式となっている。 その手法は、伝統的な肖像画への参照とともに、現代における自己表象の在り方を批評的に捉え直すものである。

“SELFY : A CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT” marks the origin of Yamaguchi’s SELFY series, initiated in 2020. These works symbolically depict the performance of identity on social media, focusing on the constructed image of a collective, contemporary femininity. Without referencing specific models, Yamaguchi captures standardized gestures—tilted heads, smartphone-in-hand poses—that form a visual lexicon of the digital age. The use of outlines and flattened compositions merges pop aesthetics with semiotic inquiry. By referencing the portrait as a traditional format while destabilizing its subjects, the series offers a critical re-examination of self-representation in the age of image saturation.
